SELF
Q. Tell us something about you – your philosophy, your lifestyle, your ethics,
your hobbies etc.
A. Canadian by birth and
Australian by heart, I have always had a leaning to things of history and culture. When living temporarily in
the Bush (Mulwala), I decided to learn something that had always attracted me – spinning wool. This I did,
and also achieved my Woolclassing Certificate from the Melbourne College of Textiles. The move back to
Melbourne took away any shearing sheds, so
when a fellow worker (at my new job) asked me to teach her to spin, I realised that I was meant to have a different
kind of wool class!
BUSINESS DETAILS
Q. What is it that your spinning yarn business does?
A. In my business, I
teach the spinning of fibre, mainly wool, do demonstrations and guest speaking spots, hold several monthly social
spinning days, organise trips and outings and nurture all students on a regular
basis. We are beginning to venture in
to the world of weekend markets, as well as attempting felting and dyeing, all at student
request.
I have wheels, parts & accessories, and spun yarn for
sale.
Q. What makes your spinning yarn business unique?
A. I bring with me the wheel,
equipment and materials for each student, so that neither the student or the venue has
to.
MARKETING
Q. What is the most important Marketing/Networking
tool/strategy your spinning
yarn business has had success with?
A. A photo in the local
free paper (Boronia The Basin Community News). They always seem to be interested in things of a local nature. Being
resident here in Boronia gives me that advantage! Being seen out and about at various Historical venues is also
extra exposure of value. Gulf Station has been particularly welcoming.
SUPPORT
Q. What is it you are looking for as a member of
HBBA?
A. Guidance and
instruction, networking and specific help on various issues.
Q. What is it you can offer to HBBA
members?
A. Help to others in whatever way I am able.
Q. How do you envisage demonstrating your support and loyalty to
the association of HBBA?
A. Attend and support events, as available.
