All too often people commence a business because they are good at producing a particular product or service and want to commence a business to sell what they know they are good at.

However, if you want to achieve success in business, you also have to have solid business skills. I read an article once that said in part: “Business is just about producing a product and selling it for more than it costs – that, and a few million other things.”

It is that ‘few million other things’ that you have to build skills for. You have to learn handling finance, business plans, customer satisfaction, marketing and much more. But don’t panic, build your skills one at a time and ALWAYS put time aside every week (preferably every day) to spend on skill building and you will be amazed at how much you can learn Be aware that the learning curve is never completed, so enjoy what you learn as it will be a lifetime experience.

You can learn skills by going to formal classes; seminars; reading; DVD’s; CD’s or by having a mentor. Most business operators undertake a combination of these resources. They become ‘experts’ by combining the skills learned with the experience of applying them.
