From A Home Base

I am often asked “what types of businesses are run from home?”

My response is “how long is a piece of string!”

There are nearly as many business types run from home as there are business people; but there is an emphasis on services rather than product. One of the most unusual businesses that actually won an award that I was orgnaising, was a couple from South Australia who bred and milked venomous snakes. What made them an award winning business though, was their innovative and creative approach to the technique of creating the anti venom.

Normally when a snake is milked the venom is sent to the CSRIO where it is injected in small amounts into a large animal like a cow or sheep. They build their antibodies up and then their blood is used to make the anti venom.

What these business operators did was figure out a way to make the anti venom without having to have blood involved. They injected tiny amounts of venom into chooks and when the eggs were laid the eggs had the anti venom properties! This was an amazing breakthrough and a couple of years after they won the Award, I saw them on TV being interviewed by the CSRIO where they were discussion this new ‘breakthrough’.
